Mastaka Taketsuru arrived in Scotland as a young man in 1918 shortly after the end of World War I and worked as an apprentice at various distilleries in Scotland (including Longmor n and Hazelburn) whilst studying for a chemistry degree at Glasgow University. Returning to Japan in 1920 with his Scottish wife Rita, he is widely credited with bringing the art of distilling whisky to Japan having established Yamazaki distillery near Kyoto in 1923 before leaving to start Yoichi in 1934.
