Unlike general-purpose microscopes adapted for POL use, the Optiphot-POL is purpose-built with a strain-free optical train, a precision 360Β° rotating circular stage, and a full polarizer/analyzer system β delivering the optical performance required for quantitative birefringence analysis, extinction angle measurement, and crystal characterization. The dual illumination capability is a key strength: reflected light mode is used for opaque specimens such as polished metals, ores, ceramics, and semiconductor materials, while transmitted light mode handles transparent and semi-transparent specimens including minerals, crystals, fibers, bone, and polymers. The swing-out condenser allows rapid switching between the two modes without disturbing the specimen. This complete system includes four M Plan objectives (5X, 10X, 10X, 40X), a 3-position trinocular head with 10X eyepieces, a reflected light illuminator, and the full polarizer/analyzer assembly. The 3-position trinocular head provides flexible light path distribution for simultaneous or switched eyepiece and camera use.
