The front of the Nine Patch Quilt is a zero waste piece, made up of over 500 naturally dyed squares that are remnants from past projects. It is a mix of cottons and linens that have been hand dyed with indigo and cutch to create shades of blue, earthy pinks and brick reds. The Nine Patch pattern is traditional quilt motif dating back to the 19th century. The backside of the quilt is made with organic cotton and cotton/linen blend fabric that have been hand dyed with cutch. The quilt is 55” x 63.5” (a generous sized throw). The front and back were machine pieced, meaning the patchwork is machine sewn. The quilting, meaning the stitches running throughout, is done by hand with cotton sashiko thread that has been dyed with cutch. Hand quilting is a very laborious and time consuming process but the impact of the hand stitches cannot be mimicked with a machine. The binding is sewn by hand.
