KYARA FUGAKU CHUTEN, Superior Aloeswood, 60 long sticks Chuten stands at the summit of Nippon Kodo’s aromatic wood range. As with Fugaku, no dyes and no fragrance compounds are used, and it is created from aromatic wood alone. Here agarwood from three sources is set one against another: the sweetness of Vietnamese agarwood for the warmth of first light, the sourness and spice of Bornean agarwood for the chill of a misted daybreak, and the salt note of Indonesian agarwood for mist creeping across the mountainside, with kyara of the highest grade drawing the whole together so that the fragrance seems to flow out of stillness. The binding powder is reduced as far as it can be, and no unnecessary heat is applied at any stage from grinding to forming, the material being dried slowly instead under controlled temperature and humidity. Each stick is hand-rolled to a hexagonal section and wrapped in washi paper. These exquisite products make copious use of precious aromatic wood with unwanted parts removed. They are carefully crafted using traditional compounding techniques passed down through the centuries by Nippon Kodo, together with the latest manufacturing technology, and, after curing for a fixed period, are then finished by hand. Only limited numbers are produced every year, because they are manufactured exclusively in winter, said to be the best season, and are made from rare raw materials. The fragrance of aloeswood derives from the resin the tree produces to protect itself from mold or stress. It is a fragrance whose character profoundly affects people’s mood, and it has been favored across epochs, regions and generations.
