A field of ochre presses against a deep maroon ground. Rothko’s No. 9, 1948, is here in full scale. The top edge of the ochre rectangle frays into the maroon like watercolor left t o bleed. Below, a narrow band of raw canvas peeks through, pale as bone. No brushstrokes are visible, only the slow seep of pigment into paper. Hang it above a low sofa where afternoon light can slide across the surface, turning the maroon into something almost liquid. Show more
