Nontronite is a member of the Smectite group of clay minerals, with a wonderful soft green colour which can vary depending on it's iron content. It is named after it's type locatility of Nontrone in the Dordogne region of France, and is also known as Chloropal, after the initial but mistaken belief that it was related to Opal. Nontronite is also a very soft mineral, coming in at only 1.5 - 2 out of 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
