Originating in 1804 as a seedling on the farm of Herman Chapin in East Bloomfield, NY, the Northern Spy Apple almost did not survive. Attacked by rabbits and mice (still a plague to this day), the tree neither flowered nor fruited for many years due to significant damage early in its life. On a neighboring farm, the Northern Spy then took another 20 years to bloom and produce apples! Commercially viable in 1844 the Northern Spy has been an American classic ever since. The apple that is large with a greenish-yellow base color that blushes red when mature. It has noticeable vertical streaks lining its non-uniform shape. Its flesh is a pale green and it's both tart and juicy. It is quite cold hardy and stores well given how late it is harvested. Widely considered a well rounded, multipurpose apple, the Northern Spy can do it all. Initially used as a baking and cider apple but is delicious off the tree. Bare Root Trees will Ship Spring 2026.
