Northwind Switch Grass is the most bolt-upright and architectural of all switchgrass cultivars, forming a striking vertical column of steel-blue-green foliage that stands rigidly upright without flopping or sprawling — even in wind, rain, or full shade conditions that cause other ornamental grasses to lean and spread. Growing 4 to 6 feet tall with an exceptionally narrow, vase-shaped profile, Northwind creates a dramatic vertical accent that functions almost like a living sculpture in the landscape. Airy, golden flower panicles emerge in late summer above the blue-green foliage, and the entire plant turns an attractive buff-gold in fall and winter, maintaining its strong upright structure year-round. Northwind thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts to a very wide range of soil types including wet, clay, and dry conditions.
