'Nottingham' is the medlar most often grown, producing well-sized, disease-resistant fruit on a low, spreading tree with characterfully twisting branches. Pale green foliage darken s with age and turns shades of pink, red and orange in autumn. Large simple white flowers appear at the branch tips, framed by leaves, making it a genuine year-round specimen tree. Flowering falls in May and June, later than most fruit trees, which puts the blossom well clear of frost. 'Nottingham' is self-fertile. Grow in full sun on well-drained soil, with shelter from strong drying winds. Fruit is picked in late autumn and bletted indoors until soft before use in jellies and preserves; birds and wildlife benefit too. Show more
