Oakleaf Sumac (Rhus aromatica var. trilobata) is a hardy, drought-resistant shrub that brings multi-season interest to landscapes. In spring, it produces subtle lush green leaves with yellowish flowers with, which give way to clusters of red berries by late summer and are favored by birds and small mammals. In the fall, Oakleaf Sumac leaves move from lush green to vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red. In the wild, this shrub can get very wide and die out in the middle; in a maintained landscape, a bit of pruning will rejuvenate and encourage more aesthetic, organized growth. Adaptable to various soil types, this low-maintenance shrub adds form, structure and color to native gardens.
