OBD2/J1939-to-DB9/DB9 Adapter Cable [Truck/Bus]
Need to collect OBD2/J1939 data from a truck/bus? This 1.5 meter adapter cable fits the OBD2 connector found near your trucks's steering wheel and lets you easily connect e.g. a CA Nedge CAN logger or CANsub CAN interface to start recording OBD2/J1939 data. The cable uses the same pinout for Channel 1 as our OBD2-DB9. In addition, it connects pins 3 (CAN-H) and 11 (CAN-L) of the OBD2 connector for logging J1939 data via Channel 2. This is useful in some heavy duty vehicles where the OBD2 connector also enables access to the J1939 data via these pins (as per the Volvo 2013 OBD2 pinout). OUTLINE TECH SPECS USE CASES FAQ OBD2 + J1939 Log OBD2 and/or J1939 from supported trucks/buses VOLVO 2013 Standard pinout matches Volvo 2013 OBD2 connectors TYPE B Type B connector head allows connection in trucks/buses SOLID CABLES Rugged quality 1.5m cable with overmolded DB9 connectors ROHS Cables are RoHS compliant and tested in Denmark 1Y WARRANTY We offer a 1-year warranty on all our products About the adapter cable This adapter cable is useful in trucks/buses that provide access to J1939 data via pins 3 and 11 of the OBD2 connector. Specifically, the cable is compatible with our CANedge CAN loggers and CANsub CAN interfaces - letting you connect either directly to the standard OBD2 connector. Like our standard OBD2 adapter, this may provide you with access to the J1939 data and/or enable you to request data via OBD2 requests. However, some trucks/buses do not provide access to the J1939 data via the standard OBD2 pins (6 and 14), but instead provide it as a 2nd CAN bus (via pins 3 and 11). This cable makes it easy to use a 2-channel CANedge or CANsub to both connect to the standard OBD2 pins (via CH1) and optional J1939 pins (via CH2). See also our OBD2 intro and J1939 intro. Need to use this with a CANsub.4/CANmod.router? See our DB25-4xDB9 adapter cable. Regarding compatibility Note that not all trucks will support access to the J1939 data via pins 3 and 11 of the OBD2 connector. However, this adapter uses the Volvo 2013 standardized pinout, which is often used in practice. As a test you may visually inspect the OBD2 connector prior to installation and check if pins 3 and 11 have 'metal pins' inside, indicating that they are at least connected. You are welcome to send us sharp pictures of the OBD2 connector if you'd like support in evaluating this. Alternative cables Generally, this adapter cable is slightly more niche vs. other alternatives for collecting J1939 data in trucks/buses. For example, if you are able to locate a deutsch 9-pin connector in the vehicle cabin, we recommend using our J1939 adapter cable. If no connector is available, you can also consider using a CANCrocodile. use cases Check out our use cases, FAQ - or buy now! Do you have any questions? If you need to e.g. record data from a mixed fleet of trucks, the adapter provides a simple way to connect your CAN logger to both the OBD2 and J1939 port of each truck. For example, the CANedge2 can log the OBD2 data via requests on Channel 1 and record J1939 data on Channel 2 - all into the same log file, automatically being uploaded to your own server. Access J1939 data via OBD2 Need to access J1939 data via the OBD2 connector? In some trucks/buses, there is no J1939 deutsch 9-pin connector available. However, in such cases you may find that the J1939 data can be accessed via pins 3 and 11 of the OBD2 connector. In this case, the OBD2/J1939-DB9/DB9 adapter can be used to gain access to the J1939 data in a simple way. Will all trucks provide access to J1939 data via the OBD2 connector? This differs by truck model/year. Generally, the most common way to access J1939 data from a truck is by using a J1939 deutsch 9-pin connector. However, not all trucks provide this interface. In such cases, the OBD2 connector may be an alternative way to interface with the truck. Here, a few scenarios may exist: The OBD2 connector may provide no access to data at all The OBD2 connector may provide access to data, but only by using WWH-OBD or OBD2 requests The OBD2 connector may provide access to broadcast J1939 data via the CH1 pins The OBD2 connector may provide access to broadcast J1939 data via the CH2 pins We cannot say from our side what will be the case in a specific truck, so you will have to investigate/test this in the field, or gain access to technical documents that describe the vehicle OBD2 pinout. If you have access to the vehicle, you can inspect the OBD2 connector to see if it has 'metal pins' in pin 3 and 11. This is a necessary (but not sufficient) condition for enabling access to J1939 data via the CH2 DB9 connector of this adapter cable. Does this adapter only work with the CANedge? This adapter cable can in principle be used with various other CAN bus interfaces or CAN bus data loggers. Just note that the input power/ground is provided only via Channel 1, not Channel 2. Of course, you should also ensure that your device pinout matches the pinout of this adapter cable.
