Abelmoschus esculentus. From Sonora, Mexico. The beautiful yellow flowers have red throats. The plants are very broad and bushy, with large leaves and are very productive. Young po ds are fried, boiled or added to stews and gumbos. The dried seeds can be roasted, ground and used as a coffee substitute. We tried it, and it has a tasty, toasty, renewing flavor (though not caffeinated)! Large mature pods are good for dried arrangements. From our Seed Bank Collection.
