Onta-yaki is produced in Hita City in northern Oita Prefecture. Decorated with slip and glazes on red clay, it has a simple, warm, yet powerful appearance. This pottery became nati onally renowned after Soetsu Yanagi and Bernard Leach visited the area and praised it as an embodiment of 'functional beauty' (yo no bi). These small dishes showcase distinctive Onta-yaki patterns. Each features one of three traditional techniques: 'tobi-kanna' (where a plane is applied to the surface while the wheel turns), 'hakeme' (where brush marks are intentionally left after applying slip), or 'kushime' (where a comb-like tool creates distinct patterns).
