As a consequence of Idunn’s absence, the gods began to age rapidly - without her apples, their vitality waned, leading to a sense of impending doom among the Aesir. They realized they must act quickly to rescue Idunn and restore their youth. Idunn’s apples serve as powerful symbols of immortality, renewal, and the cyclical nature of life, the idea that youth is not merely a stage of life, but a concept deeply intertwined with the essence of existence. Apples appear as symbols in other mythologies too: in Greek mythology, golden apples from the Garden of Hesperides grant immortality, the Apple of Discord thrown by Eris (the goddess of strife) sparked a vanity-fueled dispute between Hera, Athena & Aphrodite, leading to the Judgement of Paris and ultimately the Trojan War; the biblical story of Adam and Eve, where the apple symbolizes knowledge and the loss of innocence.
