Apples are a part of the mythology of many ancient cultures, especially Greece, where they can represent beauty and desire (the goddess Aphrodite), divine conflict (the apple of discord), immortality and magical power, and heroic challenge (Hercules 11th labor). In Old Norse mythology, found in the Eddas, apples are a symbol of eternal youth. Idunn, the goddess of eternal youth, is the keeper of an eski (a wooden box made of ash wood and often used for carrying personal possessions) full of mystical golden apples that preserve the gods of Asgard. As they age, the gods eat the apples to become young again. This cycle is to recur until Ragnarök. Idunn was once abducted by a giant, who used Loki to lure Idunn and her apples out of Asgard. Loki borrows Freyja's falcon skin and liberates Idunn from the giant by transforming her into a nut for the flight back. The giant gives chase to Loki and Idunn by transforming itself into an eagle but upon reaching Asgard, is set aflame by the Æsir. Once back in Asgard with her apples, the gods are renewed.
