Two large faces sit side by side on a deep burgundy ground, each drawn in caramel brown and gold with a turquoise edge, and each one reads two ways, because look again and the brow and nose become a pair of hooked bird heads with small white eyes. Below the faces are wide grinning mouths filled with short bars of red, green, purple and cream, set in a row like teeth. Little scrolls in orange, scarlet, lilac and white float in the spaces around them. It is 18 inches wide and 13 inches high. Every outline is cut and turned by hand in reverse applique.A mola is a hand stitched panel made by the Guna people of Panama, once known as the Kuna. Several layers of colored cotton are stacked, then cut down through one layer at a time so the colors underneath show through, and every raw edge is turned and stitched closed by hand. The technique is called reverse appliqué.
