Consolea rubescens is instantly recognizable for its flattened, paddle-like stems that grow in a branching, tree-like structure, looking almost two-dimensional. The humorous name "Road Kill Cactus" comes from its flat appearance, though it is also known as the Rubiana. While the surface looks smooth, be very careful of tiny glochids (bristles) that can detach and irritate the skin. This plant thrives in full sun, which is needed to keep the pads upright and prevent drooping. Use a very gritty mix to prevent root rot, as it is highly susceptible to fungal issues in damp soil. Allow the soil to dry out completely between drinks, but reduce frequency if the pads look plump and hydrated. Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. Decorative pot not included, the plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.
