I headed out early morning to a place by my house where I like to shoot sunrises. As the morning began to unfold, it became evident rather quickly that there wouldn't be any sunrise shooting on this particular morning. The sky was completely covered in a blanket of gray dreariness. There was a light drizzle in the air and my initial reaction was to pack it up and head home for breakfast. Then, the creative part of me began to see things quite differently. As I looked out at Biscayne Bay, I felt a sense of calm and serenity. Instead of focusing on how to best capture a brilliant sunrise, I found myself deep in thought and personal reflection. I wanted to capture this moment in a photograph and I began to think about how to best accomplish this. Fortunately, my wife had joined me and happened to come prepared by bringing an orange umbrella. I decided I wanted a minimalistic effect. I didn't want the photo to be about her so I had her face the water and in doing so she took on a more universal role in the composition. I don't see dreariness in this photo but rather a vastness that serves as a medium for reflective thought.
