Quick Product Summary The Orange Getaway Driver Guitar Pedal brings the sound and feel of a driven vintage Orange amplifier to your pedalboard, delivering everything from edge-of-b reakup warmth to thick, aggressive classic-rock overdrive. Designed as an amp-in-a-box style overdrive, the Getaway Driver uses a high-voltage circuit to provide extra headroom, dynamic response and natural compression. Three straightforward controls — Volume, Bite and Gain — make it easy to dial in convincing Orange-flavoured drive without complicated menus or excessive switching. The clever part is that it goes far beyond a conventional overdrive. A dedicated CabSim headphone/line output lets you record directly, practise silently or send an emulated guitar-cabinet signal to compatible live equipment, while an internal mode switch allows the Getaway Driver to operate as a more complete preamp for power amps and effects returns. Orange Getaway Driver Guitar Pedal Why Choose The Orange Getaway Driver? Vintage Orange Amp Character In Pedal Form The Getaway Driver is designed around the response of a heavily driven 1970s-style Orange amplifier. Rather than producing a generic smooth overdrive, it has a more characterful British voice with plenty of growl, harmonic texture and natural-feeling compression. From Edge Of Breakup To Full Overdrive The Gain control covers a useful range rather than forcing the pedal into one extreme sound. Lower settings work well for adding grit and response to a clean amp, while higher settings move into thicker classic-rock rhythm and lead territory. Bite Control For Fast Tone Shaping Instead of filling the enclosure with a complicated EQ section, Orange uses a single Bite control to shape the pedal's tonal response. This makes it quick to adapt the Getaway Driver to different guitars, amplifiers and playing styles. High-Voltage Internal Design Although it can run from a conventional pedalboard supply, the Getaway Driver uses a high-voltage internal circuit designed to provide greater dynamic range and headroom. This contributes to the more amplifier-like feel that separates it from many basic clipping pedals. CabSim Output For Recording And Silent Practice The secondary output features Orange's CabSim speaker emulation, designed to recreate the character of a miked Orange 4x12 cabinet. That means you can send the pedal directly into suitable recording equipment, headphones or a live signal chain without relying entirely on a guitar amplifier. Use It As A Preamp An internal switch changes the Getaway Driver from conventional pedal operation into preamp mode. This makes it useful for compact fly rigs, backup setups and systems where the pedal feeds a power amplifier or an amplifier's effects-return input. Orange Getaway Driver Compared With Popular Alternatives Orange Getaway Driver vs A Conventional Overdrive Pedal A conventional overdrive is often designed primarily to boost or tighten an existing amplifier. The Getaway Driver can perform that role, but its stronger amp-in-a-box character makes it better suited to players who want the pedal itself to provide a substantial part of their core guitar sound. Orange Getaway Driver vs Orange Fur Coat The Orange Fur Coat is aimed at fuzzier, more extreme textures and includes an octave-fuzz dimension. The Getaway Driver is the stronger option when you want natural amplifier-style breakup, classic-rock gain and a more traditional driven-amp response. Orange Getaway Driver vs Orange Terror Stamp The Terror Stamp goes further towards being an actual miniature amplifier, incorporating a valve preamp and power-amp section capable of driving a speaker cabinet. The Getaway Driver is considerably more pedalboard-focused and makes more sense when you already have amplification but want Orange-style preamp tones and direct-output flexibility. Orange Getaway Driver vs High-Gain Distortion Pedals Dedicated high-gain pedals are generally better suited to players whose priority is modern saturation and tight metal rhythm sounds. The Getaway Driver instead focuses on the dynamic crunch, warmth and harmonic character associated with a pushed vintage-style amplifier. Who Is The Orange Getaway Driver For? The Getaway Driver is particularly well suited to guitarists who want classic Orange-flavoured drive without needing to turn a large valve amplifier up to stage volume. It is a strong choice for: Classic-rock guitarists Blues-rock players Indie and alternative musicians Guitarists who favour dynamic edge-of-breakup tones Players building a compact fly rig Home-recording guitarists Musicians who need silent headphone practice Pedalboard users wanting an amp-in-a-box overdrive Players needing a compact backup preamp solution Looking for advice on choosing the right overdrive, distortion pedal or Orange-based guitar setup? Our experienced team of musicians can help by phone, online or in-store. Suitable Genres And Uses Classic rock: The Getaway Driver's natural home is crunchy British guitar tone, where dynamic rhythm sounds and harmonically rich lead gain matter more than extreme saturation. Blues and blues-rock: Lower Gain settings work particularly well when you want the pedal to react to picking dynamics and guitar-volume changes rather than simply produce a fixed distortion sound. Indie and alternative: Its distinctive midrange character can add personality to otherwise clean or neutral amplifier platforms. Studio recording: CabSim makes it possible to build direct guitar tones without setting up and miking a full amplifier and cabinet. Compact live rigs: Preamp mode makes the pedal particularly interesting for guitarists who want to reduce the amount of equipment they carry while retaining a recognisable core sound. What Is An Amp-In-A-Box Pedal? An amp-in-a-box pedal is designed to recreate more of an amplifier's overall gain character than a conventional transparent overdrive. Instead of simply adding a little clipping or pushing the front end of your existing amp, it can become a major part of the sound itself. The Getaway Driver is particularly useful in this role because its dynamic drive circuit is combined with direct CabSim output and a dedicated preamp mode. That means it can function as anything from a normal stompbox in front of your amplifier to the central tone-shaping component in a stripped-down direct rig. 9V vs 12V: Which Should You Use? The Getaway Driver can operate from either a 9V or 12V DC supply. At 9V, the pedal provides a slightly more compressed and saturated character that suits players chasing a softer, driven vintage response. Running at 12V provides additional clarity and punch, making it worth experimenting with if your pedalboard power supply supports the correct specification. Neither approach is universally better — they simply provide slightly different responses from the same core circuit. Story & Context Orange built its reputation around distinctive British guitar amplifiers, and the Getaway Driver takes inspiration from the raw character associated with the company's heavily driven amplifier sounds of the 1970s. The concept is deliberately different from producing a modern multi-mode distortion unit. The Getaway Driver focuses on a relatively simple set of controls and an amplifier-like gain structure, allowing the player's guitar, picking strength and volume control to remain important parts of the sound. Its direct-output and preamp functionality bring that vintage-inspired concept into a modern pedalboard environment, making the design useful well beyond players using traditional amp-and-cab setups. Compatibility & Recommended Pairings Guitar Amplifiers The standard output can be connected to a conventional guitar amplifier like a normal overdrive pedal. It can work especially well with cleaner amplifier settings when you want the Getaway Driver to supply most of the overdrive character. Effects Returns And Power Amps With the internal switch set appropriately, the Getaway Driver can operate as a preamp feeding a suitable amplifier effects return or separate power-amplification system. Recording Interfaces The CabSim output makes the pedal useful for direct recording into compatible audio interfaces and recording equipment. Headphones The cabinet-emulated output can also be used for headphone practice, giving you a convenient way to practise the Getaway Driver's driven sounds without running a speaker cabinet. Other Effects Pedals Boost, fuzz, modulation, delay and reverb effects can all be incorporated into a wider pedalboard around the Getaway Driver depending on the signal-chain arrangement you prefer. Current draw is: 30mA at 9V 40mA at 12V The pedal can also operate from a standard 9V battery. Running the pedal at different supported supply voltages affects its response, with 9V favouring slightly greater saturation and 12V providing additional clarity and punch. Always use a correctly specified pedal power supply and check polarity before connection. Fair Deal Music Verdict ★★★★★ 5/5 The Orange Getaway Driver is an excellent overdrive for guitarists who want something with more personality than a conventional boost-style drive pedal. Its real strength is the way it combines vintage-inspired Orange amplifier character with genuinely useful modern routing. You can use it as a normal stompbox, turn it into the core preamp of a compact rig or use the CabSim output for recording and headphone practice. Best suited for: Classic-rock, blues-rock, indie and alternative players looking for responsive British amp-style overdrive. Main benefit: Convincing amplifier-style gain in a compact pedal that can also handle direct and preamp duties. Value proposition: More versatile than a conventional three-control overdrive because its CabSim output and preamp mode can replace additional equipment in compact setups. Standout feature: The ability to move from standard overdrive-pedal operation to direct CabSim and full preamp applications. Customers usually upgrade from: Basic overdrive and distortion pedals when they want a drive sound with more amplifier-like character and routing flexibility. Most commonly paired with: A clean or lightly driven guitar amp, delay and reverb pedals, a quality isolated pedalboard supply and an expression of the player's own guitar-volume dynamics. Our tip: Start with the Gain lower than you think and raise the output level. The Getaway Driver's responsive circuit can produce some of its most convincing amp-like sounds before the gain reaches its more saturated settings. Showroom feedback: The Getaway Driver makes particular sense for players who like straightforward analogue-style controls but still want modern options for direct recording and compact live setups.
