‘Orchid Mania’, one of my favourites! It’s so delicate and ethereal. The watercolour palette has enabled the Orchids to shine out and be the real ‘Prima Donna’ of the painting, The extra objects in the arrangement give a vast contrast of soft/hard, which helps to give the Orchids an even more delicate feel Shadows are very important in white paintings as they help to show the form. Darkness behind the Orchids and a shadow under the pots help to bring them forward and ground them. Extra darkness, on the underside of the jug’s lid and in the flowerpot make things POP, while the shadows on the objects help to show their curvature. Spattering and a faded-out background certainly seem to be my signature technique. The mount and frame together create an ethereal/tranquil feeling to this delicate watercolour.
