I often think that ‘worth the wait’ should be spelled homophonically: ‘worth the weight.’ Worth the weight of hoping. Worth the weight of struggling through and awaiting a rainbow, a miracle, a changing tide. It has been a heavy season in the Devine household despite a whole heap of joy in the last couple of months. I’m coming to realise that in the face of big grief and medical nightmares, life still bubbles along with the requisite joys and annoyances and smiles and laughs and mundane adulting administrivia that mercilessly (maybe mercifully!) keeps ours days full. In one day you can receive potentially worrying medical news about your husband’s prostate cancer, your 6 year old can lose a tooth and write an endearing letter to the tooth fairy, a permission slip for cross country has to be signed, an RSVP comes through for your 5 year old’s upcoming birthday party and the painters finish restoring the studio and welcome you back to inspect. …and in this season I have not wanted to paint. Even though we had a holiday season over Christmas that was magical. Even though I should have been refreshed. I was not. I put it off. I flatly refused to go to the newly painted studio for reasons I can’t explain. Then suddenly it was Easter and I remembered how much I love my cosy, solitary little space so down I skipped at 4am with coffee in hand (and a little bit on my shirt because I’m an enthusiastic overfiller of coffee cups) and this piece that had been waiting, weighty on my mind with whether I would continue or paint over, stated to come together. I do think she’s rather lovely and frankly, I sort of think that sometimes, good things are worth the wait (and weight.)
