They’re often called the “lap chickens” of the poultry world because of how affectionate and easy to handle they are. Their docile nature and soft clucking make them a perfect fit for families, hobby farms, or even suburban settings where quieter birds are appreciated. Originally developed as a dual-purpose breed, Buff Orpingtons are both large and productive, offering a beautiful balance between egg and table value. They have a broad, heavyset body that sits low to the ground, and their full, fluffy feathers give them a rounded, elegant appearance. Their colouring is a hallmark of the breed — a soft golden buff that glows warmly in the sunlight. They have pinkish-white beaks and legs, with red combs, wattles, and earlobes that add a cheerful contrast. Orpingtons are also wonderful layers, producing large, light brown eggs on a regular schedule — usually 4-5 eggs per week, depending on the season.
