A 240g aluminium record weight with a felt underside — the lighter of Ortofon’s two, and the one for entry-level and sub-chassis decks. A record weight works by coupling the disc more closely to the platter. A record that is slightly warped, or simply resonant, moves independently of the platter surface underneath it, and that movement reaches the stylus as noise the cartridge cannot tell apart from music. Adding mass at the spindle holds the record flat against the mat and damps that behaviour. This is the standard version: 240 grams of aluminium with a smooth felt underside to protect the record label, finished in satin matte anodising in either silver or black and carrying Ortofon’s textured wave-grip pattern around the edge so it is easy to lift on and off. Ortofon positions the Standard specifically as the choice for entry-level and sub-chassis turntables, and that guidance is worth following. Suspended sub-chassis designs and lighter-duty bearings are the ones least able to absorb extra mass, and 240 grams is the more conservative of the two options.
