The anniversary ceremony reflected both the long history of the Academy Awards and a major year in early-2000s cinema. Alongside "Chicago", celebrated nominees included "Gangs of New York", "The Hours", "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers", "The Pianist" and "Adaptation".
