Clear to milky quartz crystals grew first, forming the sharp points and layered crystal structure. Iron- and sulphur-rich fluids later deposited pyrite, which crystallised into the distinctive brassy-gold cubic forms scattered across the surface of the quartz. The result is a striking contrast between bright white crystal points and metallic gold tones. Some pyrite crystals show minor natural surface tarnish, which can create subtle iridescent flashes. This is a normal and expected feature of natural pyrite and confirms the specimen has not been treated or enhanced. Approximate Geological Age Quartz–pyrite mineralisation of this type in China is generally associated with Mesozoic hydrothermal activity.
