The Otodus is an extinct genus of large, predatory sharks that lived during the Paleocene and Eocene epochs, approximately 60 to 45 million years ago. It was one of the early ances tors of modern sharks. Otodus sharks were massive, with estimated lengths ranging from 30 to 40 feet, making them formidable top predators in ancient oceans. Having a robust set of teeth, with the front teeth being large and serrated, ideal for grasping and cutting through the flesh of its prey. Fossil evidence suggests that they primarily fed on marine mammals, large bony fish, and other sharks. These sharks had a cosmopolitan distribution, meaning they were found in various parts of the world, including North America, Europe, and Africa. Otodus is often compared to the famous Megalodon shark due to their similar appearance, although Otodus was smaller in size and existed much earlier in geological history. Otodus sharks were impressive apex predators of their time, playing an important role in the ancient marine ecosystems they inhabited.
