An extremely optimistic perspective Inspired by cartoonist Saul Steinberg’s View from 9th Avenue and the tradition of “mental cartography,” Out East offers an extremely optimistic perspective on the journey to Eastern Long Island. A playful, idealized map of the landscape, it captures the anticipation, escape and romance of heading out east. This illustration is a view from Lexington Avenue, looking straight down 42nd Street, over the East River, onto the LIE and out to the East End. Landmarks include: The Hampton hamlets, North Fork, Chrysler Building, UN Building, the LIRR, the Jitney and the parade of black helicopters ferrying masters of the universe to and fro. Show more
