Even when you reach the highest ridge, the summit of the mountain, you feel compelled to climb up the last rock outcrop; that last nub of craggy granite from which you can survey y our accomplishment. It's a deep seated instinct to be in high places. This painting depicts just such a rocky outlook along Franconia Ridge in the White Mountains on New Hampshire. The day was hazy and the light was slanting just so.
