The headwaters are small pools and riffles while the middle reaches have long glide pools and short riffles. Fishes best in spring and summer. As we often say its all happening in the long and wide fertile Ovens valley with its large mountain ranges on both sides bottling in the, dare I say it, terrestrials - hoppers and beetles. The towns of Bright and Porepunka produce good hatches of caddis. Try a Yellow Sally or Hot Creek Caddis. Don't forget the pupa subsurface fishing, a CDC Caddis Emerger the fly to use. Grey and rust Mayfly, and the pale coloured Kossie Dun, size #14 hook, are all hatching daily doing the work to bring the fish undone. I think you should make second trip back here before the hot weather comes to this lush valley. Best Practice Tip: Pick up a few bottles of last years vintage on the way home.
