Signal Rating: 9/10 — Strong Classification: Hypnagogic This painting by Ryan Louder is part of a body of work shaped by his neurological condition — Narcolepsy with REM Intrusion Hallucinations, clinically confirmed via MSLT at Guy's Hospital, London. The work contains hypnagogic imagery — embedded secondary images, phantom figures, and forms emerging from within the scene. Neuroaesthetic markers identified: Klüver form constants (radial/tunnel eye forms); self-luminous forms; pareidolic embedding; figure-ground collapse; boundary dissolution; chimeric fusion; unstable identities — dual eye configuration mimics hypnagogic face emergence These markers are not deliberate artistic techniques but direct visual recordings of what REM intrusion hallucinations look like. The imagery emerges from neurological experience, not metaphor. Ryan has painted over 2,000 works, with over 1,000 originals sold. Each painting in this collection has been subjected to neuroaesthetic forensic analysis to identify and catalogue the perceptual phenomena present. Against a deep ultramarine-navy ground, a barn owl occupies the lower two-thirds of the canvas, its heart-shaped facial disc rendered in cream-white and pale ochre. The eyes are set forward in the disc, slightly asymmetric, pupils dark, irises a faint yellow. Above and to the right, a yellow-gold disc — too large and too bright for a rendered moon — floats as a separate luminous object. The owl's body below the face is only partially developed, the lower torso becoming a confusion of brown and grey marks before reaching the minimally described perch. The navy ground deepens toward the canvas corners. The facial disc is the compositional centre and the most resolved passage in the image. These are not hand-signed versions and come direct from Ryan Louder's preferred printer.
