Oxalis triangularis, commonly known as False Shamrock or Purple Shamrock, is a striking houseplant with deep purple, triangular leaves that open and close in response to light. This natural movement, known as nyctinasty, gives the plant a dynamic, ever-changing presence in the home. Native to South America, Oxalis triangularis grows from small underground bulbs, allowing it to store energy and enter periods of dormancy. If conditions aren’t ideal – such as low light, cooler temperatures, or inconsistent watering – the plant may die back completely. This is normal. With a short rest period in a cool, dry place, new growth will re-emerge once watering resumes. This makes it an easy and forgiving indoor plant, perfect for brightening shelves, desks or windowsills with its rich colour and delicate, butterfly-like foliage. Pale pink flowers may also appear in the right conditions.
