Quick Facts: ABV: 12.5% | Origin: Hawke's Bay, New Zealand | Varietal: 100% Pinot Grigio | Producer: Oyster Bay Wines Production & Heritage Oyster Bay sources its Pinot Grigio fruit from vineyards in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand's warmest and most sun-drenched wine region. The vines use clones 52, 457, and M2, selected specifically for concentrated fruit character, grafted onto low-vigor rootstocks that limit yields and intensify flavor. What distinguishes this wine's winemaking is the deliberate combination of lees stirring — which builds body and textural softness — with a strict avoidance of both oak contact and malolactic fermentation, preserving the grape's bright acidity and pure fruit expression. A selection of yeasts further shapes the aromatic profile. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with ripe peach and sliced apple before moving into candied lemon, pineapple, and crushed summer florals. Subtle dried herb and gentle spice notes emerge as the wine breathes. Taste: The palate entry is soft and juicy, delivering generous grapefruit and yellow plum flavors at mid-palate. A savory green-fruit character builds alongside a refreshing, zingy acidity that keeps the rounded mouthfeel lively and balanced. Hints of fresh honey and minerality add depth without weight. Finish: Medium in length with a clean, crisp close marked by lingering citrus peel and a faint floral lift. The absence of oak lets the fruit and mineral character ring clearly through the final note. How to Drink Oyster Bay Pinot Grigio Serve well chilled, between 7–10°C (45–50°F), in a standard white wine glass to concentrate the aromatic florals and citrus notes. This wine is built for straightforward enjoyment and works equally well as a standalone pour or in lighter wine cocktails. White Wine Spritzer: The zingy acidity and peach notes hold up beautifully with soda water and a citrus twist. Hugo Spritz: Elderflower liqueur and mint amplify the wine's existing floral character. Kir: A splash of crème de pêche plays directly into the ripe stone-fruit profile. It delivers ripe peach, grapefruit, and yellow plum flavors alongside fresh citrus and crushed florals, balanced by juicy acidity and a soft, rounded mouthfeel. The style leans fruity and medium-bodied rather than lean and austere. How does Oyster Bay Pinot Grigio compare to Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio? Santa Margherita is an Italian Pinot Grigio from Alto Adige known for its leaner, more mineral-driven style, while Oyster Bay's Hawke's Bay fruit yields a riper, more overtly fruity expression with greater body. Oyster Bay typically sits at a significantly lower price point and has earned Wine Enthusiast's "Best Buy" designation, making it a strong value alternative. Is Oyster Bay Pinot Grigio good for casual sipping? Absolutely — the soft texture from lees stirring and bright acidity make it an approachable, easy-drinking white that needs no food accompaniment. Its "Best Buy" status from Wine Enthusiast reflects strong quality at its price tier. Where is Oyster Bay Pinot Grigio made? It is produced from vineyards in Hawke's Bay, located on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. Hawke's Bay is one of the country's oldest and warmest wine regions, known for producing ripe, generous fruit across a range of white and red varieties. What foods pair well with Oyster Bay Pinot Grigio? Grilled white fish or prawns complement the wine's citrus acidity. Fresh summer salads with stone fruit echo its peach and plum notes. Light pasta dishes with lemon-butter sauce mirror the wine's bright, rounded character. Southeast Asian cuisine — especially Thai green papaya salad — plays well against its zingy acid backbone. Soft, mild cheeses like fresh mozzarella or burrata let the wine's floral aromatics take center stage. What sizes does Oyster Bay Pinot Grigio come in? The standard format is a 750ml bottle, which is the most widely available size across retailers. Is Oyster Bay Pinot Grigio worth the price? Oyster Bay positions as a well-priced, everyday wine that punches above its weight — a claim supported by the Wine Enthusiast "Best Buy" designation and a 90-point score from James Suckling. It represents strong value in the Pinot Grigio category without sacrificing complexity. Why Oyster Bay Pinot Grigio? The dual 90-point scores from James Suckling and the International Wine & Spirit Competition, combined with a Double Gold and Class Champion medal at the 2024 Rodeo Uncorked International Wine Competition, place this wine in rare company for its price range. The winemaking approach — lees stirring for texture with zero oak or malolactic fermentation — gives it a distinctive identity: fuller and softer than most Pinot Grigios, yet bright and pure in its fruit. Hawke's Bay's warm, dry climate and the use of carefully selected low-vigor clone plantings deliver concentrated flavor that cool-climate Italian examples often cannot match at a similar price. For drinkers accustomed to reaching for a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, this Pinot Grigio is a compelling reason to explore what else the country's vineyards can deliver.
