It’s a shield from the sun (but not the rain!) with Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Woodsman, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion surrounded by the infamous deadly poppies of Oz. L. Frank Baum’s n ovel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” with W. W. Denslow’s illustrations, quickly sold out of initial printing in 1900, thus establishing “The Wizard of Oz” as one of the first uniquely American fairytales, while introducing characters that continue to delight global audiences over 100 years later.
