Vitamin B6 naturally occurs in 3 major chemical forms: pyridoxine, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine. While each of these forms has vitamin activity, only P-5-P (also called PLP) has an active coenzyme function in the body. P-5-P plays an important role in amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter production, and a variety of other metabolic reactions. Non-P-5-P forms of vitamin B6 are generally converted to P-5-P before being utilized in the body. How does P-5-P compare to other forms of B6 such as pyridoxine hydrochloride? Although pyridoxine hydrochloride is the most commonly used form of vitamin B6 in dietary supplements, and the best-studied, it must be converted to the active coenzyme form, P-5-P, to be utilized by the body. In certain clinical settings, subjects responded better to P-5-P than to pyridoxine, suggesting that they had less ability to convert pyridoxine to P-5-P.
