The depiction of the altarpiece The Seven Sorrows of the Virgin is the first major work that D¨¹rer created after he settled in Nuremberg as a master. Its style is still related to the late Gothic tradition. The seven paintings, which show scenes from the life of Christ, were originally mounted on a single panel grouped around the figure of the Mater Dolorosa (Alte Pinakothek, Munich) and presumably formed a winged door of an altarpiece in the Schlosskirche in Wittenberg.
