Some days you only need 2 compartments and other days 4 compartments. The dividers fits tightly to the lid and makes the lunch box leakproof (for thicker things like yoghurt etc) no matter what configuration you make. To remove the dividers slightly pull the side walls out and then lift the divider out - to insert you slide and snap it down between the ridges.
