Theme-and-variation pieces occupya very large chunk of Paganini’s compositional catalogue. This particular set of variations was composedon a stirring theme from Rossini’s tragic o pera, Mose in Egitto (Moses in Egypt). In the opera, the tune issung by Moses on the shore of the Red Sea, whoprays for deliverance from Pharaoh’s pursuing army; his prayer is triumphantlyanswered, and the bad guys meet their doom in the water. Requiring many of the same technical acrobaticsas Paganini’s other works, this piece makes a great recital finale or encore!
