I (Leanne) know from personal experience that panic and anxiety attacks can be a truly terrifying experience that, at best leave you with an awful feeling of impending doom and at their worst, can have you feeling as though you may die. Your heart races, your chest tightens and you feel sick/dizzy which causes further panic, creating a vicious cycle. This is the first time I’ve ever written down my own experience but I think that it’s necessary to explain what led to my love of aromatherapy and essential oils. My own panic attacks began after recovery from a brain stem haemorrhage in my 20’s. It left me completely paralysed, unable to move and talk. After brain surgery and months of rehabilitation learning to walk, talk and perform the simplest of tasks again I was finally able to come home. This hadn’t seemed likely as my family were told that there was a very slim chance of my surviving the surgery, to the point of my little boy, who was 3 at the time, being brought into the hospital to say goodbye. Upon coming home I felt a mixture of emotions. I felt truly blessed to have survived and felt that it was nothing short of a miracle that I was learning to walk, talk and get full function back again. On the flip side I felt traumatised, terrified and in a constant state of panic about ever having to relive that experience. This led to my panic attacks. The daily panic attacks were so severe that they actually brought on psychosomatic symptoms whereby my right arm and leg would lose all strength, simulating the first symptoms I experienced when the brain haemorrhage began. This would convince me that I was having another brain haemorrhage and send me into an even deeper state of panic. It was a horribly cruel, vicious cycle and I knew that I couldn’t continue to live in that state of fear and risk wasting the second chance at life I’d been given. Rather than turn medication and be left feeling numb, I decided to create my own natural remedy.
