The PanYun by YEDC is a dual-sided haptic spinner inspired by Dunhuang art and Chinese cultural symbolism. Its name translates to "Playing with Clouds," reflecting the flowing cloud motifs and intricate engravings featured throughout the design. Created in collaboration with the Dunhuang Museum in China, PanYun incorporates traditional patterns such as Flying Apsaras, auspicious clouds, and dragon imagery drawn from the Mogao Grottoes. One side features magnetic haptic feedback, while the reverse houses a bidirectional mechanical ratchet mechanism. Both sides rotate freely in either direction, allowing users to experience two distinct tactile systems in a single collectible. The mechanical side uses a spring-and-bead structure that can be tuned by replacing components to achieve different feedback profiles, or converted into a free-spinning coin when the internals are removed. Later versions, including PanYun 3.0, introduced a redesigned central pillar system that improves structural integrity and simplifies disassembly. Each unit includes a hand-woven tassel lanyard, specialized disassembly tool, and spare springs and beads for customization. Released across multiple generations, the PanYun series has evolved through both artistic and mechanical refinements, making it one of YEDC's most technically advanced and culturally significant creations.
