Papyria is a medium-weight civilization strategy game for 1โ4 players set in Mesopotamia around 1500 BC, where movement along the Tigris, Euphrates, and overland routes determines which actions your growing society can take. Send wanderers and ships across the region, add landscape tiles to your domain, establish cities, temples, and mines, produce lapis lazuli and papyrus, develop inventions, and prepare increasingly valuable scoring opportunities. The elegant catch is Knowledge: however successful your civilization becomes, your current Knowledge limits how much you can benefit from many scoring events, so expansion without learning can leave a magnificent empire strangely incapable of appreciating its own accomplishments. Growth Is Good. Knowing What to Do With It Is Better. Papyria gives you a civilization that can spread in several directions at once, but very little permission to treat all of them as equally important. Your wanderers create an overland network. Ships follow waterways. Landscape tiles build a personal territory. Mines generate lapis, river regions provide papyrus, structures unlock opportunities, and inventions improve what your civilization can accomplish. Then Knowledge quietly limits how much of your beautiful scoring engine you can actually cash in. It is an elegant brake on pure expansion and one of the game's most interesting strategic tensions. How the Game Works On your turn, move either a Wanderer along the land network or a Ship along the waterways. The sector where that piece arrives determines a set of three available actions, from which you choose two. Those actions can let you draft landscape tiles or scoring multipliers, construct Cities, Temples, or Mines, produce lapis lazuli or papyrus, improve your developing territory, or pursue the inventions and special scoring opportunities that shape your strategy. Your personal landscape becomes its own tile-placement puzzle as Forests, Mountains, Rivers, Sanctuaries, and constructed features create increasingly valuable patterns. Scoring tiles and multipliers encourage specialization, but Knowledge places a ceiling on many individual scoring gains. Sometimes increasing that ceiling is more valuable than adding one more apparently productive building. The game ends after resource supplies are sufficiently depleted and enough end-game conditions have been revealed and fulfilled. After final scoring, the civilization that best balanced territory, resources, technology, construction, and Knowledge wins. Why Youโll Love It Movement determines your available actions, making positioning part of the action-selection system rather than a separate concern. Land and river networks give Wanderers and Ships different strategic roles. Your personal landscape creates a satisfying tile-placement and spatial-scoring puzzle. Knowledge prevents runaway point explosions and forces you to develop intellectual capacity alongside economic growth. Lapis, papyrus, inventions, buildings, and scoring multipliers provide multiple interconnected routes to victory. Includes dedicated solo play for players who want to explore the system away from the multiplayer table.
