Kamehameha Butterfly (Vanessa tameamea) This is one of only two species of butterfly that are native to Hawaiʻi. The Hawaiian name is pulelehua. Its English and Latin names refer t o the royal house of Kamehameha I, who was the first monarch of a unified Hawaiʻi. In 2009 it was named the State Insect of Hawaiʻi. As a caterpillar it feeds primarily on the Hawaiian nettle plant, mamaki, but when it transforms into a butterfly it is an important pollinator for a great many native Hawaiian plants.
