City (2000) Artist: Patrick HuguesMedium: 3D lithographic multiple with hand-colouring in acrylic vitrineSize: 85 × 66.8 × 15 cmEdition: Limited edition of 40 + 3PPSignature: Signed in pencil by the artist Publisher: Flowers Gallery, London Certificate: Included (issued by authorized authenticating body) Frame: Not included Description: City (2000) is one of the most striking examples of Patrick Hughes's signature reverspective technique — a three-dimensional multiple in which the apparent rules of perspective are physically inverted, so that forms which appear to recede actually protrude toward the viewer. The result is a disorienting optical illusion: as the viewer moves, the skyscrapers appear to shift and rotate, generating a kinetic sense of depth that no flat print could replicate. Produced as a 3D lithographic multiple, hand-coloured by the master printer Jack Shirreff at the celebrated 107 Workshop, and published by Flowers Gallery, London, City exemplifies the intersection of printmaking virtuosity and conceptual rigour that defines Hughes's practice. The hand-colouring — applied with precision to each individual impression — ensures that no two examples are entirely identical, lending the work a uniqueness that belies its edition format. The acrylic vitrine is an integral part of the work, protecting the three-dimensional structure while framing the composition as a self-contained optical environment. This example is a printer's proof (P.P. 1/3), a designation reserved for impressions produced during the printing process — typically considered among the most desirable within an edition. Hughes's work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA, Tate, and the Museo Reina Sofía, and he continues to be represented by Flowers Gallery in London. That same reverspective illusion, applied to a more intimate domestic subject, defines Surreal (2018), a hand-painted 3D multiple from an edition of 50. A more architectural take on colour and gradient can be found in Studio (2023) — both available now at Lynart Gallery. Yes — it is an original 3D lithographic multiple, hand-coloured by Jack Shirreff and signed in pencil by the artist. What is a printer's proof? A printer's proof (P.P.) is an impression produced during the printing process, outside the main edition. This example is P.P. 1/3 — one of only three printer's proofs, making it particularly rare. What is the edition size? The main edition is limited to 40 impressions, plus 3 printer's proofs. What makes this work three-dimensional? The work is a physical relief structure — not a flat print — housed in an acrylic vitrine. Hughes's reverspective technique inverts conventional perspective, creating a powerful optical illusion as the viewer moves around the piece. Is a certificate of authenticity included? Yes — a certificate issued by an authorized authenticating body is included. Is the work framed? The acrylic vitrine is integral to the work. No additional frame is included or required. Do you ship internationally? Yes — with specialist volumetric packaging, full insurance, and shipment tracking. Please contact us for a shipping quote given the three-dimensional nature of this work.
