From dart points to pocket positions, the small marks on a sewing pattern matter. This heavy-duty pattern awl gives you a sharp, pointed tool for piercing small reference holes in pattern paper, helping you keep important construction details clear as you draft, trace and prepare to cut. With its shaped wooden handle and slender metal shaft, it is a straightforward workroom essential for dressmakers, pattern cutters and fashion students. Supplied individually: 1 pattern awl. A small tool for precise pattern details. Mark internal reference points Pierce a small hole at a dart point, pocket position or button-placement mark on your paper pattern. These reference points help you locate details that are not marked by a notch at the pattern edge. Keep control of the point The rounded wooden handle provides a substantial grip, while the narrow shaft lets you see where the tip meets your work. Use gentle, controlled hand pressure to make the mark you need. Useful for pattern drafting and tracing, as well as making small starting holes in suitable leather for craft work. Test the material first; this pointed awl does not cut out a fixed-size circle like a hollow punch. How to use your pattern awl. Support your work. Lay the pattern flat on a suitable protective backing that can safely accept the point. Locate the reference mark. Position the tip carefully and pierce the paper using light, controlled pressure. Keep your other hand clear of the point. Transfer with care. Use the opening to locate your mark on the next pattern or mark the fabric beneath with a suitable fabric-marking tool. Fabric tip: Piercing fabric can leave a permanent hole. Test a scrap first and only pierce where the mark will be concealed within the finished construction. For delicate fabrics or visible areas, use an appropriate removable marker instead. Choose the right tool for the mark. Awl, notcher or punch? Use an awl for small internal reference holes, a pattern notcher for registration notches along the edge, and a pattern punch for larger holes to take pattern hangers. What is included? One wooden-handled pattern awl for each quantity of 1 added to your cart. Pattern paper, backing boards and other tools are not included. Sharp point: handle carefully, store securely and keep out of reach of children. Build your workroom kit with our pattern-making tools and equipment, or compare our sewing, pattern and leather awls.
