Frequently Asked Questions Q1: What is Sileo used for in dogs? Ans: Sileo is an FDA-approved prescription medication indicated for treating noise aversion in dogs. It is labeled to help reduce fear and anxiety behaviors triggered by loud noises such as fireworks, while allowing dogs to remain calm, responsive, and functional during the event. Q2: How does Sileo work to calm dogs? Ans: Sileo contains dexmedetomidine, an alpha 2 adrenoceptor agonist that reduces noradrenaline release in the brain. When applied to the oral mucosa, it is absorbed without first-pass metabolism, producing a calming effect without causing deep sedation in dogs during noise-related stress events. Q3: How often can Sileo be given during a noise event? Ans: According to manufacturer labeling, Sileo is approved for event-based dosing during noise episodes. Treatment may be repeated if anxiety signs return, with at least two hours between doses, and no more than five doses during a single noise event. Q4: Does Sileo cause heavy sedation in dogs? Ans: Sileo is formulated at a low dose to keep dogs calm without full sedation. Clinical studies reported most dogs remained alert and functional, though some experienced mild drowsiness or temporary sedation, which typically resolved within a few hours after dosing. Q5: How should Sileo be stored after opening? Ans: Manufacturer guidance states that Sileo syringes should be stored at controlled room temperature in their original packaging. Once opened, a syringe may be reused if sufficient gel remains, but contents should be used within four weeks of opening, as labeled.
