USDA also classifies Suwanee as a midseason, 650-chill-hour peach. Fruit and Flavor Suwanee produces attractive yellow peaches with juicy yellow-gold flesh. Red coloring may develop around the pit, adding to the fruit’s attractive appearance when sliced. The fruit is freestone when fully ripe, meaning the flesh separates easily from the pit. This makes Suwanee especially convenient for fresh eating, slicing, canning, freezing and preparing homemade peach desserts. Extension information describes Suwanee fruit as attractive and excellent in quality. Pollination Suwanee is self-fertile, so one tree can produce fruit without another peach variety nearby. A second peach tree is not required for cross-pollination. However, bees and other pollinating insects can improve flower pollination and overall fruit set. Peaches are generally considered self-fruitful. North Florida Growing Note Suwanee requires approximately 650 chill hours. This places it at the upper end of the moderate-chill peach range. It may perform well in colder inland areas of the Florida Panhandle, including locations around DeFuniak Springs that receive sufficient winter chilling. Production may be less consistent following unusually mild winters. Customers closer to the Gulf Coast may not receive enough chill hours for dependable flowering and fruit production every year. When a peach tree does not receive enough winter chill, it may develop leaves late, flower unevenly or produce a reduced crop. Matching the variety’s chill requirement to the planting location is one of the most important parts of successful peach production. Suwanee can be included in the Moderate-Chill Peach Trees for North Florida collection, but the description should explain that it is best suited to colder inland portions of the Florida Panhandle. Planting and Care Plant Suwanee in full sun where it will receive at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day. Choose a location with excellent drainage. Peach trees do not tolerate standing water or continuously wet roots. Avoid low areas where water collects after heavy rainfall. Planting on a slightly elevated site may improve water drainage and allow cold air to move away from the tree during spring freezes. Train the tree to an open-center or vase shape with three to four main scaffold branches. This allows sunlight and air to reach the center of the tree and makes harvesting and routine care easier. Thin young peaches approximately four to six weeks after bloom, leaving about 6–8 inches between fruit. Proper thinning helps produce larger peaches and reduces the risk of branches breaking under a heavy crop. Prune annually because peach trees produce fruit primarily on wood that grew during the previous season.
