Schulz and Peanuts® began in the 1960s with Snoopy and the Apollo moon missions. Snoopy was often depicted in the comic strip as being on the moon, and following the tragedy of the Apollo 1 mission, Schulz was contacted about the use of Snoopy as a mascot for flight safety, to which he agreed. During the May 1969 Apollo 10 mission to survey the lunar surface before future lunar landings, the crew named the lunar module Snoopy since its mission was to "snoop around." The crew named the command module Charlie Brown.
