This heirloom variety dates back to 1884, when it was entered into the National British Pear Conference in London, competing against 600 other varieties and proceeded to win first prize. Today, Conference remains the most widely grown pear in the UK. The pears are easily recognizable by their narrow, elongated shape and medium to large size. The skin is green, often mottled with a russeted texture, which develops hints of yellow as it ripens. While its appearance may be rustic, the aromatic, buttery flesh more than compensates. Conference’ honey-like sweetness and subtle, earthy undertones make it a delightful dessert pear, excellent for poaching and canning. Typically harvested in Autumn, this variety can be stored for several months under proper conditions while still retaining both flavor and texture.
