The first few rows are worked flat to make it easier to join. It uses a Backwards Loop Cast-On and Tubular Bind-Off, and the Traveling Rib stitch pattern creates a wavy edge. The cast-on is done using waste yarn, which later gets removed once a few rows have been worked, leaving a neat edge.
