This geophytic Pelargonium is native to the Leipoldtville area of South Africa, where its dark, woody tuber is buried deep in sandy soils. When grown in full sun it produces dense, trichome-covered leaves, forming a fluffy rosette with a distinctly silvery-white appearance. As a true winter grower, Pelargonium appendiculatum dies back completely to the ground in spring and reliably re-emerges in fall, often returning with a larger head of leaves each year. As older tissue is shed, the layers accumulate around the woody tuber, which can be appreciated for its caudiciform appearance, though it grows more happily kept buried.
