This pelican gave me exactly that opportunity. Rather than trying to capture another photograph of the entire gathering, I concentrated on the details. The enormous beak dominates the composition, but then your attention moves to that brilliant yellow eye, the tiny individual feathers around the head and neck, and the incredible rippled structure of the pouch. Even the beak itself contains colours that are easy to miss from a distance — delicate pinks, creams, blues and yellows. By photographing tightly, I could remove most of the surrounding activity while still allowing the other pelicans to remain as soft shapes in the background. The result became less about Pelican Time the attraction and more about the individual bird standing right in front of me. Why It Matters Familiarity can make us stop looking. Pelicans are such a regular part of life around The Entrance that it is easy to see one and simply think, “there’s another pelican”. This pelican stood calmly amongst the crowd, seemingly unaffected by the commotion around it.
