Oleum Botanica’s Peppermint essential oil is from Australia and is distilled from the Peppermint plant Mentha piperita, belonging to the Lamiaceae (Labiatae) botanical family. It is a perennial herb that is a cultivated hybrid of M. aquatica and M. spicata which are other varieties of the mint family. Naturalised in Europe and North America, Mentha piperita is also cultivated throughout the world including Australia. Production mainly occurs for the flavouring and toothpaste industries. Peppermint has been used for thousands of years as a culinary herb and traditional remedy. Particularly as an infusion for digestive disorders and to freshen the breath. The oil itself may not have been used until around the 16th Century. Aromatically Peppermint essential oil is classed as a top note, fresh, mint aroma with a melting sweet undertone. Peppermint essential oil blends well with citrus oils, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon and rosemary. Also with strongly sweet florals and spices.
